Travel Morocco: Marrakesh or Essaouira ?

Morocco, a country that effortlessly integrates tradition and contemporary lifestyle, provides a fascinating tapestry of experiences for all visitors. In this post, we explore the charming cities of Marrakech and Essaouira, uncovering the distinct attractions and vibes in each town.

Marrakech: The Medina Magic

Moroccan food spices

The Medina, located in Marrakech's ancient heart, is a maze of narrow alleys, bustling souks, and gorgeous riads. The air is filled with the fragrances of spices, and the vibrant atmosphere is both hectic and exciting. Visitors are immersed in the hustle and bustle, encountering local vendors, artists, and the enduring attraction of Moroccan handcraft from leather bags to home furnitures. Navigate the maze-like streets, interact with craftsmen, and enjoy traditional cuisine in crowded markets.

Staying in the Medina provides an authentic, yet intense experience. The contrast between opulent riads next to devastated home with villagers and kids asking for money can be emotionally moving if not overwhelming if you have never been exposed to this type of experiences. If you are looking for a calm trip, staying on the outskirts of Marrakech, away from the busy Medina might be a good idea. Resorts such as La Palmeraie or hotel like ‘ Le perroquet bleu’ provide a tranquil haven with wide grounds and exquisite amenities. These stunning locations, which are easily accessible by car or cab, offer a peaceful break from the city's bustling activity.

If you decide to stay in the medina maze, you will find some amazing street foods and wonderful shops. Yet, be aware that if you loose your way to go home and villagers help you find your way back, they will most likely expect some money in return and will not hesitate to ask you for it( google map will help you to have an idea but most little streets are not accurately updated on the system while taxis cannot have access in the narrow streets that can only be navigated by walk or on moto/bike). Same for ‘ guides’, most young men will present themselves as the guardian of the area or as a city guide; they will stick to you all day if you don’t firmly ask them to leave you alone and they will expect remunerations for every or any informations that they share with you about the city. Some might be helpful out of kindness, but be aware that they might just be after finances.

Also prices will vary according to where you are from- or how rich the locals vendors are expecting you to be. Therefore knowing some locals to negotiate on your behalf, especially if you look like a foreigner and don’t speak French or Arabic, might be helpful. Most Moroccan do speak English, yet as it isn’t one of their native language, only speaking English will give away that you don’t necessarily know their cultures/ prices and locals might try to take advantages of your lack of informations when selling you produces. For more competitive prices, travelling to Morocco out of season or in January/ February might be a good idea. Also comparing prices from one store to the other or asking the rhiad/ hotels where you stay more informations can also give you great insights on the price range.

Essaouira: Coastal Serenity & Adventure.

medina Essaouira Unesco

The "Wind City of Africa," has a unique coastal charm. Essaouira's mediaeval walls, picturesque harbour, and limitless lengths of sandy beaches provide a more easygoing vibe than Marrakech.

Essaouira offers a variety of activities for individuals who enjoy water sports and a relaxed lifestyle; such as windsurfing, quad in the desert, kite surfing, horse ballad and beach camel rides. The city's medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, features a mix of Portuguese, French and Berber architecture.

To stay in a royal riad, we recommend the stunning ‘ Mumtaz mahal’ hotel for its spectacular rooms, great location in the city and helpful concierge service assisting you in booking diverse activities around the city. To enjoy marvellous authentic food, we fell in love with the rooftop ‘ Ksou’, a wonderful cafe and restaurant also offering live music at night with a traditional Maroccan show.

At the opposite of Marrakesh, Essaouira is like a little village where everybody knows each others: people are very helpful and will naturally even walk with you to bring you to the place you are looking fo- without expecting any money in return.

Essaouira or Marrakesh?

Marrakesh or Essaouira

Essaouira offers a relaxed atmosphere on the Atlantic Ocean, while Marrakech is a vibrant city; Essaouira stands out as a one-of-a-kind coastal treasure due to its many activities and soothing sea breezes. The absence of persistent street vendors creates a more peaceful environment, allowing tourists to explore at their leisure.

Marrakesh and Essaouira both provide amazing restaurants and hammans where you can enjoy a great selection of natural treatment and ressourcing massages with the traditional argan oil and black soap used as part of North African beauty secrets. One of our favorite hamman in Marrakesh is ‘ Les bains du lotus’ for its beautiful and clean facilities with a wide range of services in a peaceful ambiance. In Essaouria ‘ Spa cocooning’ also offers high quality treatment in a bright atmosphere alongside wellness packages.

Morocco offers a diverse range of experiences, from the bustling rhythms of Marrakech's Medina to the beach tranquilly of Essaouira. Each city provides a unique blend of culture, adventure, and relaxation, guaranteeing that each visitor experiences their own piece of Moroccan enchantment. Embark on an extraordinary tour and allow Morocco's wonders to captivate your senses.

When crafting your Maroccan trip, If you have a hard time deciding between the two towns, just know that a short 4 hours drive will have you transported from one city to the others. You can also take the bus, which cost between 9£ and 15£ depending on the departure day and time; We recommend booking your transport via official website or directly from bus stations and not from second hand sites as they will not refund you if any issue or cancellations.
